Robert Blake’s L518 Java Green ’67 Beetle

Featured ’67 Beetle — Robert Blake

Robert is a new reader to 1967beetle.com. He recently sent over a photo of his first car; a ’67 Beetle, obviously. Don’t let the later year bumpers fool you. Robert explains below.

Here is a picture of my first car, a ’67 VW Beetle. I bought it for $800 back in ’72. My dad taught me to drive it. I was just out of the Army and going to school in Waco, Texas (Trade School learning Drafting). I liked the new look of the ’68 model, so I got rid of the old style bumpers and put on the new style as you can see from the black and white. I also put ’68 style tail lights on it, getting rid of the old style rear bumper and back up light. The other photo (below) shows me adjusting antenna. It was blue with white vinyl seats. I owned it for about 3 years before engine gave out. I believe it threw a rod, and sold it as is for $300.

  1. Robert,
    Did you keep the bumpers?

    1. Was going to ask that as well. Those are a bit hard to find OEM German these days.
