Hello from Austin, TX. Just a quick mention about fixing oil leaks at the rear main seal, from our good East Coast pal Chris Vallone of Classic VW Bugs.
We all know that VWs mark their spot when it comes to some oil dripping. If you don’t have a drip, consider yourself lucky, or maybe you do not have any oil in your motor! I came across a product recently that can solve the notorious “rear main seal” drip. This is probably one of the most common areas to drip on a VW air-cooled motor.

Very interesting info, and even the part numbers. Nice..
Thanks to Chris for this.
Just taught @oldvw something new. Thanks Eric and Chris!
From the guy who’s Dad started Taco Bell. Ha! Enjoy.
I spoke to my trusted VW engine builder–he has used the Speedi Sleeve for such repairs and finds it effective. He tells me that if installed properly, there should not be any excess (on the outer edge to be machined away). But if there is excess, it can be filed off using a good metal file. Although some recommend using a non-hardening sealant or other compounds when installing the sleeve, my VW contact says that he doesn’t do this. Speedi Sleeve is manufactured by Chicago Rawhide and is distributed by SKF (and perhaps by others as well). When contemplating such a repair, is it good to consider other factors such as gear teeth wear, etc. If the flywheel is too worn or damaged (other than the sealing surface) to be of good use, it might not be a candidate for the Speedi Sleeve repair.
