Butch Wilson’s L639 Zenith Blue ‘67 Beetle

I bought my ’67 Bug in July 2019. I found it on Facebook in Douglasville, GA.
I immediately named it Charlie and I got to work on it.

I’m not new to VWs. I’m ’65, and bought my first when I was 14. I had several through the years and ’67s have been my favorite. So when I found this one at a good price I jumped on it.

I started by appraising the condition. I found it solid with very little rust and appears to have never taken any serious hits. It had the original owners manual. It was bought from Schoenfield’s VW in Marietta, GA. The manual had the original engine number in it and it match the engine in the car. I pulled that out to rebuild and reinstall later. I put in a 1600 DP I had built earlier to drive Charlie in the meanwhile.

Thanks for reading!

Hello, I'm Eric. I started Air-Cooled Artifacts (previously, 1967beetle.com and Lane Russell). I drive a '67 Beetle daily and love to share vintage Volkswagen stories with the world.

  1. I thought L633 was Blue, not white

    1. This is a blue car. :)

      1. I think Mark is referring to the title. L633 is VW Blue which is the darker blue for 67’s. This car is L639, Zenith Blue, the lighter blue for 67’s.

        1. Editor goof. Whoops!

  2. I am glad to see that you have traced the history of your car, Butch. Have you also researched the M-Code Crayon Markings on the floor of the trunk. There is an article on the subject on 1967beetle.com. Long live the relationship between you and your great Beetle! jay

  3. Nice, a serious detail will make it look like a million bucks!

  4. Nice

  5. Something must be wrong with my phone. I see a white beetle, not blue.

  6. The goof is duly noted. I hope to have my story of my VW Blue L633 up soon. I had my hopes up, as I don’t get to see too many L633’s around.

  7. Charlie is a handsome fella. I dig it.

  8. I still can’t believe I labeled the color incorrectly. The site email goes out to over 10,000 people. :P

  9. I spent quite a few trips to that dealership in Marietta with my mom then several years later I bought myself a 67 blue
