Classic VW Bugs — Small Business Stories

Today is a very special day. It’s my beautiful, amazing, loving wife Amanda’s birthday.

I’ve been wanting to collaborate with my very talented friend Ward Jenkins for as long as I can remember. After a few emails and phone calls, Ward and I started the creative process.

The general visual direction is, where we have been in life and our future. If you know me personallly, you know that Amanda and I were blessed with twins earlier in the year, Milo & Olive, who look very happy on Dad’s roof rack. They are the pride of my life. Of course, the illustration also contains things that make us who we are.. My background in skateboarding, design and love for the ’67 Beetle (this is our Savanna Beige). Also, Amanda’s love for photography.

  3. Happy birthday Amanda, from one Scorpio to another. :)
Eric, a Scorpio woman has charm, passion, allure, inner strength, and can overcome any obstacle …..(necessary for dealing with twins)……….but she also has a mind of her own. If you think you can tame her, forget it.

  5. Happy Birthday Amanda! I hope those beautiful twins are doing well along with everyone else in the Shoemaker household. I’ve seen your work and it’s really inspiring to see, through the eyes of the photographer! Eric is so very lucky to have someone so talented, not to mention the twins!
    Take you guys, Jaime

  6. Well, I am biased because Eric is my creative son-in-law and Amanda my inspiring and talented daughter. I have known from the beginning of their relationship that they “complete each other.”(hey, that would make a great movie line, wouldn’t it?) They have brought great joy to our lives every year but especially with the addition of Milo and Olive! Our family is truly blessed. God is good.

I must say Eric and Ward did a wonderful job of creating a treasured gift that Amanda will love for a very long time.

  8. It looks like Atlanta on the right and San Francisco on the left. I see that the license plate is correct, and is that meant to be Eric jumping his skateboard off the building in the background on the bottom right? The Bug is certainly Savannah Beige, the wiper arms are silver, though, it looks like the horn grill is a little more than two fingers from the edge.

Most important is that Milo and Olive are adorable — perfectly accurate!

    1. Tom,
Yep! We spent the most time with me art directing the visuals for the ’67. Those being key elements us purist care about.

    2. And yep, that’s me in the background skating. My youth in ATL.

You did a great job. I told you, us ’67 purist are weirdos!

        1. Ward,
Eric is right about the “weirdos” but be assured it was all in jest. Your drawing is outstanding! I love everything about it from the colors to the design to the faces and cool details. Not only a beautiful drawing, but also a great thought in planning this — Eric, you’re an inspiration for husbands to do special things for our wonderful wives!

          1. Oh, it’s all good! I figured you were commenting in jest. :) And thank you for the nice words – it was such a pleasure to do this for Eric and Amanda. They are a wonderful couple with two adorable twins & it was the least I could do for them.

          2. Tom,
Thanks for the kind words. Amanda, Milo & Olive are my world. Ward’s a great friend and gifted illustrator.

  9. Happy Birthday Amanda! Great illustration! WOW!

      1. First, let me comment that I didn’t know that the ladies had birthdays! But, if it has to happen, it couldn’t happen to a Nicer Lady than Amanda! Happy Birthday, Amanda! You are the First Lady of 1967Beetle.com!

Ward Jenkins captured it all! What a time capsule.
