1967 Volkswagen Beetle — The People’s Car

Great story, Jay. They don’t call it the “People’s Car” for nothing. It’s these emotional tales between human and old machine that connect us all. As always, thank you so much for your contributions to 1967beetle.com.

Have you heard someone talking about his first car? There’s a certain nostalgia attached to that first automobile—no matter what make of vehicle it might be.

But the stories abound when it happened to be a Volkswagen. And, when it happened to have been a Beetle—a 1967 Beetle…..well, the story just gets bigger right there!

While surfing around the web, I happened upon a video which embodied the best of Worlds—that first car, which, as it happened, turned out to have been a 1967 Ruby Red Beetle.

That’s when the members of a family went underground to produce the birthday present of a lifetime, to surprise a husband, father and grandfather.

My wife, Neva, and I have been driving and working on VWs for over 41 years. In fact, we raised our family in these cars. Now, we are retired and enjoy VWs as a hobby. The ’67 Beetle always has been our favorite year. We own a '67 Beetle and a '68 Karmann Ghia.

Thx for sharing Jay! I dream that someday this happens to me with my other (first) lotus white 67' sitting in storage awaiting much TLC. Makes my night! Thx Again.

Hello, Gavin. I hope that you and Mary are doing well. Winter is about over for you folks, I think. I didn't know that you had yet a second '67! Good for you. Twins are good! (right, Eric?). Someone once told me: "You can't trust a person who has only one VW!" Now, I would not go quite that far--hahahaha--but, I say--the more, the merrier! jay

Thx Jay! I bought my first 67' in July of 1990, as a junior in college. I set my mind to restoring it someday. I've waited 27 years this July but my other VW friends tell me a "real man" would wait 30 yrs...LOL. Yes, indeed twins are good!

Well, Gavin...you could begin by accumulating good replacement parts for the brakes, fuel system, etc., etc. Draw up a plan of action with goals to meet--once you start the actual work on the car. You've waited this long--it won't hurt to think the process through and through. It gives you time for researching things. jay
