In Our Thoughts – Jay Salser

Many emotions have flooded my mind over the past 24 hours. Questions, worry, and anxiety from hundreds of miles away as the news poured in little by little from Neva. (Jay’s wife)

I’ve learned that Jay Salser is currently in a medical induced coma as he slowly, hopefully works his way back to recovery in a Texas hospital. With Neva’s permission, I’m letting the ’67 Beetle community know the latest as of 10:46 PM on 2.19.19.

In her own words.

“It will probably be a few weeks to a month before Jay is back at his computer, so a word to his favorite group would probably be in order. I know he would want you to thank the LORD with him for answered prayer in preserving his life. We do appreciate your prayers for his recovery.

The short story is: Jay’s heart threw off a shower of clots during A-fib that blocked arteries in the small intestine, of which 1/2 died. The surgeon removed the dead tissue and reconnected for full function. He’ll be in ICU a while, in hospital a little longer, and in physical rehab a little longer before he’ll be back at his desk.”

So many know this, but Jay is admired all over the world for his articles, advice and knowledge shared here at 1967beetle.com. He’s a very humble guy. His efforts and labor of love for sharing vintage VW knowledge does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

He’s helped this community grow in ways I could have never imagined possible.

If you’ve been touched by Jay, (we all have) please chime in below and say a few words. I’d like to consider this a get well card.

We love you, Jay.

He seems like a person who would give you the shirt off his back, drop whatever he was doing to help you fix a leaking fuel line, or offer a kind word to anyone in pain. Hang in there Jay, Think of this like an issue with the Beetle. The years have taken their toll, but with some good repair work you’ll be back on the road again. We’re pulling for you.

Besides the comfort Jay gave me knowing he was just a phone call,or email away for any VW issue, Jay was there for my Family when our daughter Arron was in ICU with pneumonia. Arron is high risk because of her Downs Syndrome, but like Jay, is a fighter! Jay and Neva through prayers, phone calls, mail, and emails supported our Family. Arron recovered and returned home, but Jay still periodically would send a note saying he had been thinking of Arron and asking how she was!

Like many of you I have never met Jay, but I have felt as though I had and that he and Neva were longtime friends! Prayers and wishing you a speedy recovery my friend!-Dick, Carolyn and Arron Diaz (Fillmore, CA)

You are my “Go To” EXPERT on the details of this year Volkswagen. And, I’m somewhat of an expert as well because I’ve owned my Early ’67 since December 1977 (41 Years).

Very sorry to hear of your recent medical problems, but very, very happy that you are on your way towards recovery.

Please know that I will be Praying for you when I go to the St. Jude Novena tonight, and subsequent Wednesday nights until your full recovery.

We need you back at the pc with all your great articles, and you need to put that Sun machine to good use that you received from David Brown. Before I knew who Jay was, I purchased a Pierburg fuel pump from him. When I opened the package I was very moved, not by the pump (which was pristine btw!) but from seeing that he included the book of John in the package. Jay is a genuinely great person, many prayers for a full and speedy recovery my friend.

I read your precious messages to JK this morning. With each one he told me about you and your car and thanked you for your message. Yesterday he convinced the nurse to smuggle him some Sprite. He walked down the hall. Just now he is waiting for his breakfast.

Dear Daughter, Janeva is in charge of our family through this. I’m staying home and careful as per family instructions. I can do this since the crisis is past and the children are watching over him 24/7. Thank you for your encouragements and prayers. The LORD has been gracious to give us more JK-time. I am so thankful!!!! ~~Neva

  64. Good morning, everyone. Here’s the latest I have from Neva.

    “Hello,

JK had a bit of a set-back today with a bacterial infection in the gut. More antibiotics, Sigh. Yes, of course he NEEDS them. It is just that with them the gut can’t develop friendly hosts to learn to digest again..

You’re going to say,  “Stay out of it, Old Lady.  He’s in good care.” And I’ll whole-heartedly agree with you.

He got a transfusion today.  And the gut took up it’s war again.

Thank you for listening and for supporting JK and Janeva in your prayers along this dimmly lit, unmarked road. May they have deep rest tonight.”
